On Valentine’s Day, the girls’ varsity basketball team wasn’t spending a typical Valentine’s Day such as spending time with lovers or going on a romantic date. They had a Regional Finals game to play. The game was against and at Norland High School and the winner would advance to Lakeland for States. Going into the game, the girls were pumped up and ready to add on to their history streak.

At tip-off, the starting lineup consists of Samantha Provenzano (’16), Cristine Alayon (’17), Auviance Lindo (’17), Gabriella Cordero (’16), and Jeilyn Perez (’16). The Lady Jags started off on fire keeping their lead by 9 at the end of the first quarter, 15-7. “Being that Norland is a very tall and athletic team, we knew that we had to keep the momentum up,” said Lindo. Going into the second quarter became a little shaky as Norland found their way back into the game. By halftime, the score was tied 19-19. Coach Olsen stressed to the ladies that if they do not pick their act up now, this will be the end of their season. The game was on line.

The girls regained themselves came with a new mind set into the 2nd half. It seems that Norland did too because right off the bat, both teams were attacking in eagerness for the victory. The opponent went on a 6-0 run to begin the 3rd quarter which majorly hurt the Jags. Unfortunately, the ladies couldn’t find their first quarter rhythm for the rest of the game and the Lady Jags fell 10 points short of proceeding to States. Key players throughout for the Jags were guards Provenzano and Alayon as they both contributed in having 15 points each. The game resulted in a score of 52-42, Norland. “It was a good ride overall, but this is only motivation for next year. We got this,” said Cordero.
