Jesse Ascunce ranks at the top in the world for Beach Tennis
Senior Jesse Ascunce started playing Beach Tennis just this past May, and he has managed to accomplish making his name known to Beach Tennis players all over the world. Jesse currently ranks as number one in U.S. juniors, and number 2 in junior doubles along with sophomore, at West Broward High School, Zack Lane.
Jesse earned his ranking from competing in the 2012 Frank Congemi International Federation of Beach Tennis (IFBT) World Cup. The competition attracted many players from across the nation as well as from Puerto Rico, Peru, the Czech Republic, and numerous other countries. On May 20th, while working at the IFBT Dania Beach location, the team was in need of an extra player to partner up with Zach Lane, for doubles in the Junior Boys Division. “I didn’t think much of it”, says Jesse when he was chosen to play with Zach, but “we ended up getting second place.”
His regular Beach Tennis partner is senior Brandon Rodriguez who started playing just this past August. Together they won 3rd place in ranked matches in September, when going against the top players in the world, which one of the opponents happen to be Jesse’s boss. That match as well contributes to his ranking.
Jesse recalls “winning 3rd place with a dive” as his favorite moment in playing Beach Tennis so far. He plans to compete in the next Frank Congemi IFBT World Cup event in May 2013. He is currently training to compete in Beach Tennis in the 2016 Olympics, when it will then be a trial sport.
